When you arrive at your camping destination, you’re excited to get set up and begin your experience. To make your camping adventure more pleasurable, follow these five tips for choosing a campsite.
1. Look for Level & Smooth Ground
Check the ground before you pitch your tent. Sharp rocks underneath your sleeping bag can make for a long night of tossing and turning. While you might want to be under a canopy of trees for shade, you do not want to have the floor of your tent filled with tree roots. Be sure there is space to set up your tent away from the roots of the trees.
Flat ground is important to find so that you don’t roll down the hill at night. You also need level ground to set up your cooking space.
2. Balance the Elements of Nature
While you’re camping so that you can enjoy the outdoors, you also need to think about the impact of the weather on your trip. A spot that has a mix of shade, a breeze, and access to water is ideal. Before pitching your tent, try to determine the direction of the wind. You want air to flow through your tent to keep you cool.
Avoid standing water that can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Situate your campsite near fresh flowing water. Not only is it peaceful, moving water will not usually be buggy.
3. Consider the Campsite’s Amenities
Many campgrounds have amazing amenities such as pools, showers, and game rooms. While those details may have helped you select the campground, you need to decide how close you want to be to them. If you like the noise, the flow of people, and intent to participate in the events, look for a campsite near all the activities. However, if you’re seeking a respite from crowds, locate a campsite at the outer edges of the campground.
4. Think About your Neighbors
If you are traveling with a large crowd and planning a series of parties, be considerate of your neighbors. Explore areas of the campground where you might be able to set up multiple adjacent tents. Setting you and your group apart from any neighbors can give you some privacy to enjoy the time with your extended group. If you are camping to enjoy the peace and quiet of the woods, search for a spot to pitch your tent away from larger groups.
5. A Place to Enjoy the Scenery
Campgrounds are often located in the midst of stunning vistas. Before setting up your get-away, think about the biggest reason why you selected this campground. If you’re there to go hiking, establish your home base near some of the scenic trails. If you’re planning on fishing each day, set up your tent close to your soon-to-be favorite fishing holes. The best scenery for you will be to situate yourself near the amenities that drew you to this campground.
